Link Summary
Many provisions were designed to control slave populations and prevent rebellions. There were several laws that were shared throughout the slave states. For example, slaves were not allowed to learn how to read and write. Also, there were specific codes in each slave state that suited their region. In Alabama, slaves were not allowed to leave the owner's premises without their owner's written permission. In South Carolina, no slaves were allowed to work for pay or wear clothes finer than "Negro cloth".
