Link Summary
South Carolina was a slave colony from the beginning. Many African slaves were brought in, to work for South Carolina's plantations and farms. Sooner or later, the black population outnumbered the whites, which scared the slave owners that a slave revolt may occur. To prevent these revolts and own more slaves, South Carolina started to make many new laws for the slaves. They were called Slave Codes. They started making codes from 1686 and kept on making more and more laws, when later in 1712 slaves could be freed. However, these slaves had to leave South Carolina in 6 months or they would be re- enslaved and sold in public auction.
